How a Custom Product Bundle Builder Drove More Sales for Pickle & Pumpkin

Pickle & Pumpkin is a popular Shopify store that specializes in high-quality, GOTS-certified organic cotton baby clothes. Their collection includes popular zip rompers, bodysuits, matching knotted hats, and leggings. They have become a top choice for parents and thoughtful gift-givers. The brand focuses on quality, comfort, and charming design. This approach has helped them build a strong and loyal customer community that trusts them to offer the best for newborns and toddlers. As their popularity increased, they wanted to improve the shopping experience for customers looking to buy complete, coordinated sets.
Challenges
Despite having a loyal following, Pickle & Pumpkin's standard Shopify setup faced several issues that restricted their revenue potential and made shopping frustrating for gift-givers.
- Inefficient Customer Journey:To buy a full gift set, customers had to navigate multiple product pages and add each item to their cart individually. This complicated and lengthy process led to cart abandonment and frustration.
- Missed Revenue Opportunities: A key lost opportunity was the lack of a bundling feature. This resulted in a lower average order value than expected, as the store did not effectively encourage customers to purchase more items in one transaction.
- Lack of Product Personalization: Customers could not easily create their own matching, personalized sets on the website. This failed to meet the needs of a significant group of consumers looking to assemble the perfect, thoughtfully chosen gift.
- No Guided Selling: The brand could not guide customers toward popular or profitable product combinations due to the standard setup. They struggled to show how different products could be paired together to create an attractive, well-designed set.
Objective
As Pickle & Pumpkin grew, they noticed an important trend. Many customers were buying various items to create their own gift sets. Customers had to navigate multiple pages and add each item to the cart one at a time. This process was inefficient. It also represented a missed opportunity for the company to assist customers, increase the Average Order Value (AOV), and improve the shopping experience. They needed a solution that would allow customers to quickly create their own customized gift sets and bundles on one page.
My Role & Responsibilities
As the technical lead for this feature-focused project, I managed the entire lifecycle of the custom bundle builder, from conception to implementation.
- Strategist & UI/UX Designer: I focused on creating an intuitive user experience that drives conversions along with the overall feature strategy. I aimed to make the process of creating a personalized gift set both easy and enjoyable to increase the Average Order Value (AOV).
- Lead Developer: I handled the technical implementation of the dynamic bundle feature, theme integration, and custom coding. Writing clear, modern JavaScript was essential to create an interactive, real-time experience that felt seamless on the Shopify platform.
- Performance & QA Specialist: My final responsibility was to ensure the new feature was fast, error-free, and did not disrupt site functionality. This important step ensures that the new feature improves the site's Core Web Vitals and protects the user experience.
Process
Developing a strong custom feature requires a careful and systematic approach. To turn the bundle builder from an idea into a tool that boosts conversions, I followed a six-step process.
- Discovery & Strategy:I began by defining the company's main goal. They wanted to raise the Average Order Value (AOV) by creating an engaging custom bundle experience. This involved digging deep into their analytics to understand consumer buying patterns and set clear project objectives.
- UI/UX Design:I developed a user-friendly and visually appealing flow for the bundle builder based on the client’s brand guidelines. The thoughtful design of the entire interface makes building a personalized gift set easy and enjoyable, guiding the customer through the selection process.
- Frontend Development: To create the interactive portion of the bundle builder, I started from scratch using Shopify Liquid, CSS, and JavaScript. Customers could choose products, prints, and sizes and see their personalized bundle update instantly, thanks to this rich, real-time experience.
- Backend Integration:I then integrated the new feature seamlessly with Shopify's main system. Connecting the builder directly to the cart, inventory, and pricing logic was a key step that ensured correct processing of all orders for custom product bundles.
- Testing & Performance Optimization: To guarantee a consistent and error-free experience, the feature went through thorough QA testing on all major browsers and mobile devices. I also ensured that all new code was lightweight and did not impact the site’s fast page load time.
- Launch & Monitoring: After a successful launch, I monitored Shopify Analytics closely to gather real usage data for the feature. This helped me confirm that the new bundle builder was effectively increasing the Average Order Value (AOV) while functioning smoothly.
Solutions Implemented
I created a custom solution to meet the project's goals, and it integrated easily into their existing Shopify store. To offer an experience that a regular app couldn't provide, the solution focused on custom development.
- Custom "Product Bundle Builder" Development: The main part of the solution was a product bundle builder that I coded from scratch. Customers can select from a set list of items, like a swaddle, hat, or romper. They can also choose their favorite color or print, with the page updating in real time to show the entire personalized gift set. This creates a high-end, interactive experience and addresses the poor customer journey.
- Dynamic Pricing & Discount Application: I included a dynamic pricing feature in the builder to encourage larger purchases. This logic automatically calculates and shows the savings a customer gets by buying the bundle instead of the items separately. By making the value clear and attractive, this solution helps to raise the Average Order Value (AOV).
- Seamless Theme Integration: The final part of the solution was the seamless integration of the theme. I used custom Shopify Liquid and JavaScript to fit the new bundle builder into their product page template without needing a cumbersome add-on. This ensured that the feature did not harm site performance and matched their brand's look perfectly.
